Summary
Merlz, going by the username xkmerlz, is a DJ/producer with a bear-aesthetic who joined the party-scene of VRChat in 2022 after his friend SergeantFreeman introduced him to a virtual venue called Sanctum. He's the founder of Hive Mind aswell as the lead of Artist Relation at Subsystem. He also runs a digital music label called Widefield.
Musical Style
While initially starting with a focus on Hard Dance music, Merlz has soon shifted towards playing a multitude of genres and styles, with a general focus on electronic dance music. Instead of playing those individually through separated sets, he's known to play a blend of these genres within single performances. Under his alias hypermanic, he has a stronger focus on a trance-induced, melancholic sound. Playing genres such as neo-trance and ambient jungle.
History
After his first attendence at Sanctum, he soon started to discover and frequent other virtual parties and events, where he discovered a vibrant and diverse community of music lovers and creators. Merlz’s introduction to DJing in VR happened by chance, when he was inspired by another VRchat DJ named GeeKaz to dust off his old dj controller from the basement and try it out in VR. On a Saturday, July 2nd 2022, he set up his equipment and opened up a public instance of Club Orion where he played a mix of Hardstyle- and Hardcore-music for anyone who joined. To his surprise, his lobby attracted a lot of attention and soon reached a peak attendence of approximately 50 people. Merlz ended up playing a 5-hour-liveset, telling all of his friends about his thrilling experience, the positive feedback and the fun he had. He then decided to turn DJing in VR into a regular hobby.
